I’m delighted to have Jan Graham on my blog today to talk about her new release, One Night in Sydney.
Jan: I’m so excited about the release of One Night in Sydney. When I looked at the City Night’s series by Tirgearr Publishing and noticed the absence of Australian destinations from its titles, well, I knew I had to do something to rectify the situation.
I chose Sydney as my city to write about because I’m so familiar with it. I’ve always lived within driving distance of it, which means, heading into the hustle and bustle for theatre events or concerts is an easy thing to do. Sydney is not only a great source of live shows it also has amazing shopping areas, spectacular parks, museums, galleries, and the harbor precinct with the famous Opera House and Harbor bridge.
I had a great time writing this book. As an author, writing about something close to home is always easy, well it is for me at least. Sydney has always been the place to go to for fun and adventure, particularly during my younger years. Of course I’m not going to tell you about the many wild weekends I’ve spent there because, just like Vegas, what happens in Sydney stays in Sydney.
While writing the story I visited Sydney to investigate the Friday Foodies Market in the rocks where Abby and Kane reconnect after their initial meeting. I researched hotels where they could stay and the Vivid festival that Abby and Kane attend. Vivid is my favorite event on the Sydney calendar each year. The harbor is transformed into a mural of spectacular color for two weeks. If you ever get a chance to visit Vivid you won’t be disappointed.
Writing about the landscape, sites and attractions featured in the story meant the reactions of the characters to their surroundings took on a different aspect for me. It became personal. As did the spontaneous magnetism Abby and Kane felt for each other, it all stemmed from a familiarity I remember well. Yes, I admit it, I have experienced a similar attraction to a complete stranger or two while visiting Sydney and acted on it. I also need to confess that instant, lustful desire, hasn’t happened for a while now, in any town or city around the world (insert sad single face here…lol). Great, now I’m having visions of Bridget jones drunk on the floor being eaten by dogs.
Sorry, I digress, back to the book.
I’m not sure if the familiarity I’ve mentioned will give the book a greater authenticity or not, that’s something only the reader can decide. If nothing else, even though researching all these things is part of my work as a writer, it’s also fun and I hope the pleasure I experienced while visiting Sydney is reflected in my work for my readers to enjoy. All in all, Sydney is a spectacular place to visit, a great place to write about and, in One Night in Sydney, it’s the perfect place to fall for the man of your dreams.
